Gravity and gravitas

I was interested in the plot of that new Clooney and Bullock film, Gravity. frontDuring my sifting through a thousand short stories for the Escape Velocity anthology and magazine a few years ago for Adventure Books of Seattle, I received at least two with exactly that plot line – ie astronauts marooned on a space walk and needing to make their way manually to another space station / vehicle to survive before being burnt up in the Earth’s atmosphere. The film doesn’t seem to have been written from a novel but as a screenplay, co-written, co-produced and co-edited by Alfonso Cuarón. I wondered if one of my submiiting writers had their story published elsewhere (they needed too much work to go in the magazine and they weren’t prepared to work with me on them) and was picked up afterwards. However, Gravity has been in project form in Hollywood for years before Escape Velocity magazine existed. If I had time I’d sift through those stories again to see if the writers worked in Hollywood and ‘borrowed’ the idea.

Having said that marooned in space is pretty common fare in science fiction. It’s a small literary world.

If you think you’ll enjoy the film GRAVITY, you would be sure to like the Escape Velocity Anthology. Check it out here http://www.adventurebooksofseattle.com/purchasetitlesamazon.htm

Many famous SF names are in there – Sonny Whitelaw, Jaine Fenn, Ian Whates, Mark Iles, Catherine Edmunds, Gareth D Jones, Robert Harkess, Mark Lewis, Paul Freeman, Jonathan Pinnock, Kaolin Fire, Bec Zugor, and the esteemed science fiction poet, Magdalena Ball.

Edited by me and Adventure Books of Seattle owner, Robert Blevins.
